AAT LEVEL 1
Summary of the Course
The Level 1 Certificate Accounting consists of 11 units and five assessments.The qualification has been designed to help target the issues of the lack of literacy, numeracy andemployability skills currently in the UK. In addition, this qualification aims to increase the availability ofemployment-ready candidates amongst long-term unemployed young people. This new level 1 buildson the Access qualification, introducing units covering bookkeeping, payroll and computerized accounts to provide an all-round introduction for students.
Learning Objectives
This qualification aims to ensure students gain a practical introductory understanding of accountancyin the workplace and how to conduct themselves in a professional environment. It has been designedto provide students with basic accountancy, bookkeeping and payroll knowledge. Students will learnhow to use computerized accounting software and spreadsheet programmes, as well as gains anintroduction to basic business principles.

Creating business documents
Students will be able to use to a range of business documents used within the accounting function and other areas of a business.
Mathematics for accounting
Students should be able to perform a range of basic mathematical functions using financial data.
Essential accounting procedures
Students will understand and apply basic accounting terminology and procedures.
Accounting in a professional environment
Students will be able to understand the role of a finance professional in any organization and apply ethical behavior and professionalism within an accounting environment.
Introduction to bookkeeping
The aim of this unit is to enable students’ understanding of the basic role of bookkeeping within different types of organizations, and to know and understand the basic terminology used in bookkeeping.
Working within bookkeeping
The aim of this unit is to provide the student with knowledge of the general principles of single entry bookkeeping, VAT, cash and credit transactions, different systems and processing information, and in general the roles and responsibilities of individuals working in bookkeeping.
Bookkeeping and accounts
The aim of this unit is to test the student’s ability to undertake basic bookkeeping practices and to process source documents that underpin accurate record keeping.
Computerized payroll administration
The aim of this unit is to enable students to know how to set up and use a computerized payroll system by entering and processing various types of employee data, using various data sources, in a timely and accurate manner and within the requirements of specific company policy and statutory legislation.
Payroll processing
This unit aims to provide the student with knowledge on calculating income tax and national insurance contributions, use tax codes and HMRC approved tools, understand and provide information on the basic components of payroll and the methods of making payments to employees.
Computerized accounts
The aim of this unit is to enable students to operate computerized accounts software to carry out routine accounting tasks. These tasks include being able to create accounts, process accounting information in respect of the sales and purchase ledger, understanding how to use batch control sheets and being able to produce accounting reports such as trial balance, customer activity reports and supplier details reports.
Spreadsheet software
The aim of this unit is to enable students to understand the uses of a spreadsheet and populate a spreadsheet with a variety of different data. It also focuses on the use of formulas to provide information in a variety of formats, knowing how to use various approaches to present spreadsheet information accurately and effectively.
